Why I felt inspired to write the book, and how its principles can impact your life
Independence Day, July 4th, is a cherished holiday for most Americans. Families come together to eat, play, and celebrate the day our Founding Fathers ratified the Declaration of Independence with music and fireworks.
What is your favorite tradition on July 4th? Do you go to the pool, lake, or ocean to enjoy your freedom?
What if July 4, 2025, came and went without any celebration? What if it was just another day? Can you imagine living in America without the fireworks, food, and fun of the Fourth of July? If our generation of Americans takes our liberty for granted, we risk losing it. President Ronald Reagan said this:
“Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.”

Have you ever been to Mount Vernon, the home of America’s first president, George Washington? For lovers of American History, visiting this beautiful estate on the Potomac River takes you back in time. While walking the grounds, you can imagine taking the same paths and following in the footsteps of the Washingtons.
In the summer of 2014, my wife and I visited Mount Vernon following a trip to Baltimore. Before entering the main house, I felt discouraged due to the prevailing political climate in America at the time. I didn’t know what I could do to help bring positive change. My father fought in World War II to keep America’s freedom. He knew what to do: fight. What could I do to help keep America free in peacetime?
My concern was greater than a particular political party; it involved a perceived movement away from the inspiration and principles of America’s founding documents. If you love freedom and the opportunities it brings to America’s citizens and guests, what are we willing to do to keep our liberty? I didn’t know what to do.
As my wife and I entered the central passage of Mount Vernon’s main house, I noticed a small rectangular box with a glass front that hung prominently on the wall. It contained an old key. Our guide told us that the key was a gift from General Lafayette to General Washington. It was a key to the Bastille, a military prison in Paris. The Bastille had become a symbol of political tyranny and was demolished at the beginning of the French Revolution. Lafayette sent the key on its seven-year journey to the “Father of Liberty.”
As I stood there, looking at the Bastille key, I believe I was divinely inspired to join the fight for the preservation of America’s liberty. As a Christian American, I wasn’t going to fight with bullets or bombs, but with words and faith.
In 2018, The Liberty Keys: God’s Instructions for Keeping America Free was published. This book is a call to action for all Americans, especially Christian Americans, to help prevent America from straying from the wisdom of our foundational documents. I believe this book will inspire you to do everything within your power to preserve America’s freedom.

It contains a complete copy of the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution, and their respective histories. You will learn five things that Americans can do to stand firm in freedom. As Christian Americans, you will also read about the five things you can do to stand firm in freedom.
